Only minutes that have been submitted are displayed. ---- January 24, 2006 Meeting was called to order at 1930 with 15 detachment Marines and 3 guests from the Anne Arundel Detachment on deck. All officers present and/or accounted for. Correspondence was read from one of our scholarship recipients. We also received a card from Don and De Nikoden of Howell, MI with a $50 donation to the Marines Helping Wounded Marines Program. Minutes of previous meeting accepted as published in the newsletter and Paymaster’s Report accepted, subject to audit. Sick and in Distress: Marine Harold Mazmanian has been plagued with back trouble and will be treated at the VA. We were glad to see Marine Bob Walton in attendance at the meeting after a lengthy absence due to serious health problems. Officers’ Reports: Commandant Oliver advised that our membership numbers have been static and encouraged all to recruit vigorously. Windshield fliers are available from Marine Saki. Sr. Vice Commandant: Excused Jr. Vice Commandant: Also encouraged recruiting. Advised that contacting MIA members has not yielded encouraging results. Judge Advocate: Reiterated that he has windshield fliers, which have been an effective recruiting tool. Committee Reports: Rifle/Pistol Teams: Pistol matches to be held in the spring, with exact dates TBA. Marine Joe Roman was presented a trophy for taking second place in the Sharpshooter Class at the recent rifle matches. Scholarship: Committee has been meeting and information will go out to Howard County high schools in the next few weeks. Detachment members are urged to contact their employers for donations to the fund. Scholarship application forms are available on the detachment web site. Marine for Life: NTR Toys for Tots: Committee chairman Starliper thanked all those who assisted with the detachment collecting a truckload of toys for needy children. Marine Corps Birthday Ball: TBA Marine Corps League Registration Plates: Contact Commandant Oliver if you wish to obtain these. Road Clean-up: We will have our first clean-up of 2006 in the first part of April, exact date TBA. Fund Raising: Marine Ferguson was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his assistance and donation to the 2005 tournament, as was the Anne Arundel Detachment for their excellent participation. The 2006 tournament is scheduled for 16 June. Please contact Marine Kippenbrock if you can assist with the 2006 tournament. Anne Arundel members also noted that their tournament is scheduled for May 1. As to our other fundraiser, Marine Casey will contact Wal-Mart to arrange schedule for hot dog sales. Old Business: Detachment/Department Marine of the Year: Marines Kippenbrock, Casey, Roman, and Downer were placed in nomination for Detachment Marine of the Year. Nominations remain open and detachment will vote at the March meeting. We will vote on Department Marine of the Year at the February meeting. Nominations for detachment officers will be open at the February and March meeting with elections to be held at the April meeting. Katrina Fund: Due to a lack of applicants for assistance, the Department of Maryland has not yet donated monies collected for hurricane relief. If $400+ donated by the detachment is returned, we will have to decide what to do with it. New Business: Funds approved to maintain detachment website. Good of the League: Marine Corbett suggested change of tax status to encourage donations from businesses. Was advised that National has already studied issue and we cannot. Marine Corbett also advised that he and his family would soon be moving to Florida. As a parting gift to the detachment, he donated a collection of First Day covers from the recent issue of outstanding Marine stamps. Mike was instrumental in the establishment of the detachment and conceived the golf tournament. He will be sorely missed and we wish him well in his future endeavors. Announcements: Information on the National Mid-Winter Conference in Virginia is available on the National web site. Marine Guy Hall is organizing a nostalgic trip to Parris Island, leaving 26 April and returning April 29. Highlights include a base tour and attendance at both Eagle, Globe, and Anchor and graduation ceremonies. Cost is $150 and includes lodging in a barracks and meals in the mess hall. We meet on the parking lot near Eggspectations on 108 at Snowden River Pkwy and clean a one-mile section of Rt. 108. Scholarship: Schools have been notified. Information and forms are available on detachment website. Fundraising: Sr. Vice Commandant Casey will report at the next meeting on Wal-Mart hot dog sales for the upcoming season. Golf Tournament: Detachment golf tournament scheduled for June 16. Deposit has been made to secure Ft. Meade course. Apple Ford has already made a generous donation and detachment members are urged to solicit corporate sponsors and golfers to fill tournament’s 120-golfer limit. Old Business: Recruiting remains a priority for the detachment. We will also consider newspaper, radio and TV ads as detachment finances permit. Good of the League: Volunteers requested to assist the VFW with their road clean up at 0830 on 18 March. Dennis Starliper, father of Jr. Vice Commandant Pat Starliper, applied for Associate Membership, was accepted and duly sworn in. Welcome aboard, Dennis! Correspondence: New National By-Laws have arrived. Detachment scholarship awardee Allison Tarwater sent us correspondence advising she is doing very well at Harvard. Minutes of previous meeting and Paymaster’s Report accepted. The National Financial Report and Marines Helping Wounded Marines financial report have been received and are available for review. Sick or In Distress: Marine Harold Mazmanian continues to be plagued with back problems. The sister of Marine Bobby Flock is gravely ill and in hospice care in St. Louis. Officers’ Reports: Commandant: Deferred until later in meeting. Sr. Vice Commandant: Stressed importance of supporting upcoming Golf Tournament fundraiser. Jr. Vice Commandant: Advised we now have a Pennysaver ad. Committee Reports: Pistol/Rifle Teams: We now have 7 members signed up for Pistol Tournament. See Sr. Vice Commandant Casey if you are interested in participating. Fundraising: We will have 4 hot dog sales at the Ellicott City Walmart, 2 in the spring, and 2 in the fall w/ dates TBA. Cresip Partnership has made a $500 donation to the golf tournament. Detachment members are urged to obtain golfers for the event and to volunteer as workers on the day of the event. We also need to solicit gift certificates from local merchants for door prizes. Adopt-A-Highway: First clean-up of this year set for April 1. Scholarship: A complete overview of the program and necessary forms is now available on the detachment website. Old Business: None New Business: Detachment voted $100 to place ad in Department convention program and another $100 to purchase convention raffle tickets. Individuals wishing to purchase further raffle tickets may obtain them from Commandant Oliver. Detachment members Oliver, Walton, Betts, and Roman will be delegates to the Department Convention, with detachment paying their registration. Detachment voted a $100 donation for the Hospitality Suite at the Department Convention. Detachment voted to expend up to $35 for a detachment copy of Roberts Rules of Order. There was a discussion concerning detachment attendance at an Evening Parade at Marine Barracks, Eight and Eye, and it was agreed we will determine a date at the May detachment meeting. Good of the League: It was announced that hotel space for the National Convention is filling up quickly and members are urged to make reservations ASAP if you plan on attending. Next detachment dinner at VFW 8097 will be 14 April. There have now been requests for Hurricane Katrina relief and donations previously made will be expended for that purpose. The Marines Helping Wounded Marines Program has now been consolidated by National Headquarters under the administration of Ron Short. A very fine MHWM challenge coin is now available for $10, as are vials of sand from Iwo Jima for $5 w/proceeds going to the MHWM program. Detachment member Bob Walton was recognized for his contributions to the establishment of MHWM. Announcements: Plans are being made for MCL participation at the November 2006 opening of the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA. MCL members will be shuttle-bused from the Fairfax Marriott to the museum dedication. Plans are also being made for the National to hold a birthday ball at the hotel in conjunction with the dedication. Details to follow. Correspondence: Received letter from State Highway Administration thanking us for participation in the Adopt-A-Road program. Received e-mail from Major Luccio at Quantico advising us that the dedication of the SSgt. Taylor BEQ has been postponed to July 21 due to Mrs. Taylor’s illness. Received e-mail noting the NSA’s former Marine Detachment. Sick and in Distress: Marine Flock’s niece passed away and her sister is mortally ill. Marine Mazmanian’s back troubles continue. Marine Walton broke and tooth which required emergency surgery. Golf Tournament: The ever-generous Booz, Allen, Hamilton, Marine Saki's employer, has made a $500 donation to the golf tournament. It was noted that we still need golfers and sponsors. Road Clean-up: Next clean up is scheduled for June 3 (Note: This will most likely change due to conflict with the Dept of PA Pistol Match.) Scholarship: Marine Saki noted that the Howard County schools database needs to be updated. Pistol/Rifle Teams: Pistol match scheduled for first weekend in June. Those registered who have not yet paid need to remit $30 to Paymaster. Old Business: Registration for Dept of MD convention still available. Reminded detachment that after $300 of ad sales, 50% of all after that goes back to detachment. XO Mitchell advised that the Annapolis Young Marine Detachment, now 26 strong, has lately posted the colors and otherwise participated in numerous local events, including Memorial Day services and Old Soldiers Day recognition. At the conclusion of her presentation, Detachment Commandant Oliver presented her with a check for $250.00 to be applied toward an upcoming YM detachment trip to Parris Island. Correspondence: Received letter from scholarship recipient Allison Tarwater, who reports that she is currently in Cairo, Egypt where she is furthering her studies in Arabic. Following her sojourn there, she is going to Europe for some mountain-climbing. Sandra Nicht sent the detachment a donation for the Marines Helping Wounded Marines Program. The Marine Corps League Foundation sent us a letter thanking the detachment for our donation for Hurricane Katrina relief. Sick/In Distress: Marine Bob Walton had surgery to replace his pacemaker and was resting comfortably at home the next day. Officers Reports Commandant: Participated in color guard at the recent Washington Nationals “Veterans Appreciation Day” baseball game. Thanked all who participated in recent detachment golf tournament, road clean-up, and hot dog sales. Sr. Vice Commandant: Excused. Detachment advised that SVC’s employer has temporarily assigned him to Delaware and he does not yet have e-mail available. Jr. Vice Commandant: Stressed vital importance of continued recruiting and advised that with the assistance of Marine Don Downer letters will be mailed soon to members we seldom see. Judge Advocate: Reported on recent highly successful hot dog sale at Ellicott City Wal-Mart. Committee Reports Fund-Raising: The comprehensive report on the golf tournament will be presented at the July detachment meeting. Rifle/Pistol Teams: Applications are being accepted for the Department of Pennsylvania Rifle Match to be held on the last weekend of September. Scholarship: The scholarship committee reviewed 13 applications for scholarships and two were selected. Awards will be made at the July detachment meeting. Newsletter: The detachment newsletter has been submitted for the annual newsletter competition. Taylor, was recently discharged from the hospital and is now recuperating at home. Detachment Marine Bob Walton continues to have problems with his heart pacemaker and blood pressure. Officer Reports: Commandant: NTR Sr. Vice Commandant: Excused Jr. Vice Commandant: Reported on the dedication of Taylor Hall, the new BEQ at Quantico named for SSgt. Karl G. Taylor, Sr. who was assigned to OCS as an instructor prior to his deployment to Vietnam. The dedication was attended by detachment Marines Kevin Oliver, Mike Betts, Jon Heckendorf, and Department of Maryland officers Jack Severn and Bud Raines. The keynote speech was given by LtGen (Ret) Martin R. Steele, who credited Karl Taylor with inspiring him to enter OCS as a corporal and rise to general rank. Many of the Taylor family attended the ceremony and it was good to see them again. Committee Reports: Rifle/Pistol Teams: The detachment won several awards from the May pistol matches. Chuck Casey took 3rd in the Marksman Class, Pat Starliper took 2nd. The detachment took 2nd Place Team in the Sharpshooter Class. Rifle Team Captain Kippenbrock reported that it does not appear that there will be a Department of Pennsylvania rifle match this year. More info to follow. Road Clean-up: There will be another Road Clean-up in September. Check detachment activities schedule for date. Marine-for-Life: NTR Birthday Ball/Cake-cutting Ceremony: Due to the Marine Corps League National Birthday Ball being nearby, the Anne Arundel detachment will likely not be hosting a ball. Discussions are underway about combining our cake-cutting ceremony with theirs. Fundraising: The last hot dog sale at the Ellicott City Wal-Mart cleared an outstanding $512, much of it from donations. The annual golf tournament cleared $6,374.39. The detachment voted to distribute the funds by $1,274.39 to the General Fund, $1000 to the Scholarship Fund, $3,000 to MHWM, $1,000 as seed money for the next tournament, and $100 to the Chaplain’s Fund. Old Business: None New Business: The detachment will send three delegates to the National Convention. The detachment voted to expend the $6 registration fee for each delegate and $100 to each in expense money. The detachment voted to expend $300 to purchase a brick inscribed with our detachment information to be placed in a walkway at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico. Motion passed to contribute $500 to VFW Post 8097 for a new sign in front of the building. Good of the League: The 8th and Eye Evening Parade will be dedicated to the Marine Corps League on August 4. Marine Casey advised we need workers for the detachment dinner at the VFW on August 11. Announcements: The MCL detachment in Centreville is organizing a trip to Parris Island on August 25-28. Department of Maryland Sgt-at-Arms Guy Hall passed along a message from Mid-East Division Commandant Steve Wilson stressing the importance of vigorous recruiting efforts. Commandant Oliver read the Medal of Honor citation for SSgt. Karl G. Taylor, Sr. prior to closing the meeting at 1957. Following the meeting, scholarships were presented to two outstanding Howard County scholars. They are: 1. Christopher J. Scott, who graduated from River Hill High School with a 4.39 GPA. He competed on the cross-country team and has been very active in community service projects. He will attend Penn State University. 2. Michael Hassett, who graduated from Reservoir High School with a 4.57 GPA. He was a member of the lacrosse and basketball teams and will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The detachment also presented a certificate to Booz, Allen, Hamilton for their outstanding ongoing support of our scholarship program. The detachment cake-cutting ceremony will be at 1400 on November 5 with Marine Casey handling. The Anne Arundel detachment will have a cake-cutting at 1200 on November 11 and we are invited. Toys for Tots: Marine Pat Starliper will again head committee. An extra effort will be required this year as we do not have the resources we had in the past. We will need members to help collect toys. Hot Dog Sale: Next sale scheduled for October 14. Marine Roman will handle. New Business: National dues have been raised to $6.00 per year. We will not change the current detachment dues of $25.00 per year. Good of the League: Marine Chris Kalwa of the Anne Arundel Detachment is having some hard times and the detachment voted to expend $500 for his relief. Announcements: The VFW Ladies Auxiliary national meeting is being held at our host VFW Post 8097 on October 10 and Marine Kippenbrock requested detachment members volunteer to assist with dinner. Correspondence concerning purchases of bricks from Marine Corps Museum of the Carolinas and correspondence from the National League HQ concerning new Life Membership fees effective January 1, 2007 read. Acceptance of September meeting minutes postponed to next month due to computer problems. Paymaster’s report accepted, subject to audit. Sick and In Distress: Marine Walton reported as having had another mini-stroke. Marine Hernandez has been in and out of the hospital. Officers’ Reports: Commandant Oliver thanked all who participated in recent Wal-Mart hot dog sale, with a particular “Well done!” to Marine Joe Roman for his efforts in organizing the sales this year. Commandant stressed importance of participation of detachment members. There were no other officer reports. Committee Reports: Rifle/Pistol Teams: NTR Fundraising: Hot dog sales will continue next year. Marine-for-Life: NTR License Plates: See commandant if you would like to purchase MCL license plates. Road Clean-up: Next road clean-up will be at 0800 on December 2. The detachment has removed 250 bags of litter from our assigned area thus far. Newsletter/Website: Newsletter editor Marine Rotondo stressed importance of getting newsletter materials to him by the Tuesday following the detachment meeting. Website is up and doing well. Toys-for-Tots: Committee to meet soon. Scholarship: Committee under Associate Member Dennis Starliper has met. Please contact him if you wish to serve on this committee. We need new sources of revenue and Dennis urged any member who works for a large corporation to solicit them for a donation. Birthday/Cake-cutting: Marine Bill Pastino will again be featuring “Semper Fi Strong Ale” on November 10 at Ellicott Mills Brewing Company in Ellicott City. Members were again reminded of the National League Ball in Fairfax. The detachment ceremony will take place at the VFW at 1400 on November 5. Old Business: Recruiting/Retention: New recruiting brochures were handed out. New Business: Detachment will again purchase lights on the National HQ “Tree of Lights” to memorialize SSgt Karl G. Taylor, Sr. and deceased detachment members Jack Harding, William O’Neil, and Artie Flock. Marine Bobby Flock advised she will donate funds for the latter two members. Good of the League: Member were reminded that League by-laws prohibit any political campaigning under the auspices of the League. Announcements: There will be a detachment shoot at the Marriottsville Gun Club at 0900 on November 4. Members were urged to see the new film “Flags of Our Fathers”. Dues will be going up in January for the Marine Corps League. However, our detachment will cover the increase for our members. Don Yowell was in Howard county hospital, checked out from hospital and is possible in rehab unit. No further information is available at this time. Committee reports: November 4 cake cutting. All members present unanimously approved the motion. Chuck stressed to all members that voted to continue with Tournament that volunteers would be needed to make this a success. Toys-R-Us located on Dobbin Rd. will allow us to collect toys on December 9, 2006. Bill Pastino will be heading this. Old Business: First food gift card was sent to Chris Kalwa of Anne Arundel detachment. Motion to void check allocated for the Marines helping Marines program for $3,000.00. All members are being advised that upcoming officer election in April of 2007, nomination will be in January, February and March. Saki has inquired if anyone knows of a Marine from Howard County that is deployed or will be deployed overseas. Saki has recommended that the detachment adopt this Marine during their tour of duty. December 8, 2006 MCL Dinner at the VFW in Jessup at 1800. Volunteers are needed to help serve. Marine Bobbie Flock recommends that more members come out to support the Auxiliary dinner. It is held on the fourth Friday of each month at the Jessup VFW.
